The short answer
In Ontario, spring flowers arrive from late March through June. The best spring stems for arrangements are tulips, ranunculus, lisianthus, scabiosa, and lilac, with peonies and garden roses from late May into June.
Knowing what’s in season means fresher, more beautiful flowers at fairer prices.
Ontario spring flowers by month
| Month | What’s in season |
|---|---|
| March | Early tulips, ranunculus, stock, anemones (mostly greenhouse) |
| April | Tulips at their fullest, ranunculus at peak, lisianthus, scabiosa |
| May | First Ontario peonies and garden roses, lilac, sweet peas |
| June | Peonies at peak, garden roses, nigella, Queen Anne’s lace |
March: early arrivals
It’s still cold, but markets start receiving spring flowers from greenhouse growers. Parrot tulips in peach, pink, and white are especially beautiful. Ranunculus, stock, and anemones arrive early too.
April: peak spring begins
Tulips are at their fullest, in every colour. Ranunculus peaks, including the airy Butterfly variety. Lisianthus becomes widely available, and the first local farm flowers appear at the Ontario Flower Growers market. It’s the month we look forward to most.
May: peonies, garden roses, and Mother’s Day
May brings the first Ontario peonies and garden roses. Palettes deepen into lilac, blush, sage, and dusty rose. Mother’s Day falls in May, the busiest flower week of the year, so order early. See our Mother’s Day guide.
June: the season fully opens
Peonies peak and garden roses are abundant, with nigella and Queen Anne’s lace everywhere. June arrangements can use almost entirely Ontario-grown stems.
“The best flowers we make all year happen in May and June, when almost everything came out of Ontario soil.”
The best spring stems for wildflower arrangements
- Parrot tulips. Loose, open, and full of movement.
- Ranunculus. Layered petals in every spring colour.
- Lisianthus. Ruffled and long-lasting, often mistaken for peonies.
- Scabiosa and astilbe. Airy texture that makes arrangements float.
- Seeded eucalyptus. The fresh, aromatic greenery backbone.
When is the best time to order flowers in Ontario?
Late April through June, and late August through September, when local growing peaks overlap. Freshness and variety are at their best. See the full year.
