The short answer
To keep a wildflower bouquet fresh for 7 to 10 days: re-trim the stems at an angle every two days, change the water completely (don't just top it up), strip leaves below the waterline, keep the vase cool and out of direct sun, and pull individual stems as they fade.
1. Trim, and keep trimming
The single biggest factor in vase life is the cut. Stems seal over within hours out of water, so trim about a centimetre off each stem at a 45-degree angle when your bouquet arrives, and again every couple of days. The angled cut drinks more water and stops the stem sitting flat on the vase bottom.
2. Change the water, don't top it up
Cloudy water is bacteria, and bacteria clog stems. Every two days, empty the vase, rinse it, and refill with cool, fresh water. This one habit alone often adds three to four days to a mixed wildflower arrangement.
3. Nothing below the waterline
Leaves and greenery sitting in water rot fast and spoil the vase. Strip anything that would sit below the waterline. Wildflower arrangements are full of texture, like grasses, herbs, and foliage, so this matters more for our style than for a dozen roses.
Change the water and re-trim every two days. It takes three minutes and is the difference between a five-day bouquet and a ten-day one.
4. Choose the right spot
Keep the vase away from direct sun, heat vents, and the fruit bowl. Ripening fruit releases ethylene gas, which ages flowers faster. A cool spot with bright, indirect light is ideal. On hot Ontario summer days, a cooler room buys real time.
5. Edit as you go
Mixed arrangements age at different speeds. Cosmos may fade before the grasses even start. Pull fading stems as they go instead of waiting for the whole bouquet to turn. A wildflower arrangement often gets looser and lovelier as it settles.
